Uganda is one of East Africa's most rewarding destinations for wildlife safaris, offering diverse landscapes, remarkable biodiversity and opportunities to encounter some of Africa's most iconic animals. From the open savannah plains of Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks to the remote wilderness of Kidepo Valley, Uganda offers exceptional wildlife experiences throughout the year.
We organise private Uganda wildlife safaris with experienced local driver-guides, comfortable 4x4 safari vehicles and flexible itineraries. Our journeys combine guided game drives, boat cruises, wildlife photography, nature walks and visits to some of Uganda's most celebrated national parks.
Whether you want to see lions hunting on the savannah, elephants gathering along the Nile, hippos along the Kazinga Channel or the rare shoebill in its natural wetland habitat, Uganda offers a variety of wildlife experiences to include in your safari.
Uganda offers a unique combination of savannah wildlife, tropical forests, wetlands, lakes and river ecosystems. This diversity allows visitors to experience different habitats and wildlife species within a single journey.
Unlike destinations focused mainly on traditional savannah safaris, Uganda combines classic game viewing with forest exploration, primate encounters and water-based wildlife activities.
Some of the highlights include:
The Big Five: Opportunities to see lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos during a multi-park safari.
Tree-climbing lions: Search for the famous lions of the Ishasha sector in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Elephant encounters: Observe large elephant herds in Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo Valley.
Boat safaris: Explore the Victoria Nile and Kazinga Channel, home to hippos, crocodiles, elephants and numerous waterbirds.
Giraffes and zebras: Encounter Rothschild's giraffes in Murchison Falls and Lake Mburo, alongside zebras in Lake Mburo.
Shoebill tracking: Visit Uganda's wetlands to search for one of Africa's most distinctive bird species.
Primate encounters: Combine savannah wildlife viewing with chimpanzee trekking and mountain gorilla experiences.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest national park and one of the country's leading wildlife destinations. The park combines extensive savannah grasslands, woodland, riverine forests and the Victoria Nile.
Wildlife viewing is particularly rewarding in the northern sector, where visitors can encounter elephants, Rothschild's giraffes, lions, leopards, buffaloes, hartebeests and several antelope species.
The park's signature experience is a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls. Along the riverbanks, visitors can observe hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants and a wide variety of waterbirds.
The Nile Delta boat excursion offers another excellent opportunity for birdwatching, including the chance to search for the prehistoric-looking shoebill.

Lake Mburo National Park is a convenient wildlife destination in western Uganda, particularly for travellers travelling between Kampala, Entebbe and southwestern Uganda.
The park is known for its zebras, impalas, elands, giraffes, buffaloes, topis and hippos. Its relatively compact size makes it suitable for short wildlife safaris and as a stopover on journeys to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Lake Mburo also offers activities that are less common in other Ugandan national parks, including guided walking safaris and horseback riding.

Uganda offers more than traditional game drives. Travellers can combine different activities to explore its wildlife and natural habitats.
Uganda is home to all five members of the African Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinoceroses.
While elephants, lions, leopards and buffaloes can be encountered in several national parks, rhino tracking takes place at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a privately managed conservation area along the route to Murchison Falls National Park.
A multi-park itinerary combining Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Park provides excellent opportunities to search for all five species.
Game drives are among the most popular activities on a Uganda wildlife safari. Travelling in a private 4x4 safari Land Cruiser, visitors explore designated tracks with an experienced guide who helps locate wildlife and interpret animal behaviour.
Morning game drives are particularly rewarding as many animals are active during the cooler hours. Afternoon and evening drives provide further opportunities to observe wildlife returning to feeding and resting areas.
Night game drives are available in selected locations and offer opportunities to search for nocturnal species.
Uganda's rivers and lakes provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing from the water.
Popular boat safari destinations include:
Victoria Nile in Murchison Falls National Park
Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park
Lake Mburo in Lake Mburo National Park
These excursions offer close views of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, waterbirds and other wildlife along the shores.
The shoebill is one of Africa's most sought-after bird species. Uganda is among the best destinations for observing this unusual bird in its natural wetland habitat.
Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe is a popular destination for shoebill excursions, while the Nile Delta in Murchison Falls National Park also offers opportunities to search for the species.
Uganda offers excellent photographic opportunities, from lions and elephants on open savannah plains to colourful birds in wetlands and tropical forests.
Private wildlife photography safaris allow travellers to spend more time at wildlife sightings and adjust their schedules according to photography interests.
One of Uganda's greatest advantages is the opportunity to combine traditional wildlife safaris with exceptional primate encounters.
Travellers can visit Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth National Park before continuing to Kibale Forest for chimpanzee trekking and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for mountain gorilla trekking.
Popular combinations include:
Murchison Falls, Kibale Forest and Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and Lake Mburo
Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi
Lake Mburo, Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth
Uganda wildlife safari combined with gorilla trekking in Rwanda
These combinations allow visitors to experience Uganda's diverse wildlife and landscapes within one journey.
Uganda is a year-round wildlife destination. However, the drier periods generally provide favourable conditions for game drives and wildlife viewing.
June to September: One of the main dry seasons. Wildlife viewing is generally good, and vegetation is often less dense.
December to February: Another favourable period for game drives, photography and exploring Uganda's national parks.
March to May: The longer rainy season. Landscapes become greener, and some roads and tracks may become challenging.
October to November: The shorter rainy season, offering beautiful scenery and good birdwatching opportunities.
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, as animals move freely within their natural habitats.
