East African Safari Holidays

East Africa is part of the Sub-Saharan region of Africa, within what is commonly known as the great-lakes region. East Africa consists of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, D.R. Congo, South Sudan, Tanzania and Burundi. The region has unique tourist destinations ranging from a myriad of physical features, heritage sites, culture and people as well as wildlife. It’s noted to be the origin of mankind following the discovery of early fossils by Dr. Leaky in Olduvai Gorge, northern Tanzania.

Popular endangered species like mountain gorillas are only found in East Africa in the whole world. These are located within Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park, Uganda’s Mgahinga and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks as well as Virunga national park in D.R. Congo. This has greatly contributed to the development of tourism industry in East Africa. Besides mountain gorillas, the region is filled with unique peoples and culture, picturesque landscapes, diverse vegetation, rich history, fascinating water bodies and the most admired weather.

Abundantly endowed with diverse vegetation types that are habitats to a number of animals, woodlands and savanna vegetation; from Kenya’s Maasai Mara, Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo Valley National Parks in Uganda have supported the survival of Big Five African mammals including elephants, leopards, lions, buffalos and Rhinos.

At least four of Africa’s highest mountains are found in East Africa, i.e., Mount. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kenya and third is the only snow-capped mountain in Africa, Mount Rwenzori while in Fourth place lies Mount Elgon the only mountain in the world that holds largest caldera. Magnificent water bodies like the Indian Ocean stretches along Kenyan and Tanzanian coast lines, Lake Victoria that’s shared by three countries of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

East Africa is a hotspot of history and culture. There are various people from different cultures such as the Kikuyu and Maasai in Kenya, Baganda and Luo’s from Uganda and other tribes spanning across the different countries. Some of these tribes are similar like the Karamojong in Uganda are similar to the Maasai and Turkana in Kenya, they are all pastoralists.

East Africa has two commonly spoken languages which are Swahili and English.

Due to the growing tourism industry, the region introduced single East African tourist visa through the East African Community, which tourists can purchase once at $100 and use it to cross different borders within the region. However the visa is only applicable in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. This is to ease the movement of tourists from one country to another within the region.
