This 1-day Bwindi gorilla trekking from Kigali is ideal for travelers who want to experience gorilla trekking in Uganda but have limited time. It is a long day, starting early in Kigali and ending back in the evening, but it gives you the rare opportunity to see mountain gorillas in the wild without staying overnight.
The journey takes you from Kigali across the border into southwestern Uganda and to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Africa’s most important gorilla trekking destinations and home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
For travelers based in Kigali, Bwindi gorilla trekking from Kigali is a practical and affordable way to see mountain gorillas. Bwindi is relatively accessible by road from Kigali, while Uganda’s gorilla trekking permits are generally more affordable than those in Rwanda. This makes a 1-day gorilla trekking from Kigali an excellent option for travelers looking for a convenient, time-efficient, and budget-friendly gorilla experience.

Your day begins very early, with a 3:00 AM pickup from your hotel in Kigali. The drive from Kigali to Bwindi takes approximately 4–5 hours, including the border crossing at Katuna. This early departure is important because it allows you to reach Bwindi in time for the morning gorilla trekking briefing.
You’ll drive through Rwanda’s scenic rolling hills, often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” before heading toward the Katuna border for crossing into Uganda. After completing immigration formalities, continue through the beautiful Kigezi highlands toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, arriving in time for your 1-day gorilla trekking experience.
Arrive at the Katuna–Gatuna border and complete immigration and customs formalities before continuing into Uganda.
You’ll arrive at the park headquarters in time for the 7:30 AM gorilla trekking briefing, where the park rangers will explain the trekking rules, safety guidelines, gorilla etiquette, and what to expect during your 1-day Bwindi gorilla trekking experience.
Following the briefing, you’ll be assigned a gorilla family and begin your trek into the forest with experienced guides and trackers. Bwindi’s terrain is dense and sometimes steep, adding to the adventure. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location.
The most exciting part of your 1-Day Bwindi gorilla trekking experience begins when your ranger locates the mountain gorilla family you have been assigned to visit. Depending on the location of the gorillas and the pace of the trek, you may reach them at any time during the morning.
Once you find the gorilla family, you will spend up to one hour observing them in their natural habitat. This is a remarkable opportunity to watch these endangered primates as they feed, rest, play, groom one another, and interact within their family group.
Your experienced ranger will guide you throughout the encounter and explain the behavior, communication, and social structure of the gorillas. You will also learn how to approach and observe them responsibly while keeping a safe distance and minimizing disturbance.
There will be plenty of opportunities to take photographs and videos of the gorillas, although flash photography is not permitted. The forest environment can be dense and the gorillas may move through vegetation, so patience is important. Your ranger will help you find suitable viewpoints while ensuring that the animals remain comfortable.
During this hour, take time to appreciate the experience beyond photography. Listen to the sounds of the rainforest, watch the gorillas' movements and expressions, and enjoy being close to one of Africa's most remarkable wildlife species.
After approximately one hour with the gorillas, you will begin your trek back through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Your ranger and trekking team will continue to accompany you, and the return journey offers another opportunity to enjoy the forest's wildlife, birds, trees, and spectacular scenery.
After your time with the gorillas, you’ll trek back out of the forest and regroup with your guide to begin the return journey to Kigali.
You’ll head to Kabale town for a late lunch, where you can relax and reflect on your experience before continuing the journey.
You’ll cross the Uganda–Rwanda border again at Katuna/Gatuna before continuing through Rwanda’s scenic countryside toward Kigali.
You’ll typically arrive in Kigali between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM, depending on road conditions, traffic, and the time required to complete border formalities. Upon arrival, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or another location of your choice in Kigali, marking the end of your 1-day Bwindi gorilla trekking adventure from Kigali.
