8 Days Wildebeest Migration Safari in Tanzania and Kenya

This safari will let you explore the great wildebeest migration found between the two iconic tourism destinations of Kenya and Tanzania. You will follow their movement from one point of their migration in Kenya (Masai Mara) to Tanzania (Serengeti national park).

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Pick up and transfer to Masai Mara

You will be met for pick up from either your hotel in Nairobi or Jomo Kenyatta Airport by a friendly and knowledgeable guide. This will be followed by simple introductions and a briefing about your exhilarating 8-day wildebeest safari that will happen in the next few days. After the introduction and getting to know your guide, you will start on your transfer to the Masai Mara national park where you will spend the next two days.

You will reach in time for a scrumptious lunch and get some rest as you prepare for an awesome evening game drive. The Maasai Mara is one of Africa's leading wildlife destinations with a diverse concentration of different games. This makes it an envied destination for many tourists visiting Africa. On your drive, you will encounter some of the big five like lions, elephants, rhinos, Buffalo and if lucky the elusive African leopard and various other wildlife.

 After the game drive retires to your lodge for a pleasant dinner, and rest in preparation for a full day of exploring the stunning Maasai Mara.

Day 2: Full day Maasai Mara experience

Your second day will be fully devoted to exploring and enjoying the beauty Kenya's most famous game reserve is known for. You will start the day with a wonderful early morning breakfast and attack the wilderness in search of the wildebeest trails and other games. While looking for the wildebeest, you will meet some of Africa's big five large pride of lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos and leopards.

Also, other games from impala, giraffes, various antelope species and countless bird species for bird lovers. You will enjoy the wildebeest migration and return to your lodge for lunch or even better have a lunch picnic in this amazing wilderness for an enhanced experience plus saving time as you spend more time in the wild. You will continue with an evening game drive to explore more of Maasai Mara.

Retire to your lodge later for refreshing, relish a well-deserved rest after a pleasant dinner under the beautiful Kenyan skies.

Day 3: Transfer to Arusha from Maasai Mara

You will arise early enjoy a cheerful breakfast, check out of your lodge and start on your journey to Nairobi. On your way out of the reserve relish one more time the stunning beauty of this African gem from its gorgeous landscape, the various wildlife such as antelopes, and impala, predators like lions hunting for breakfast and the beautiful climate. You will link to Arusha via the Namanga border as you enter your second destination for the wildebeest migration safari experience.

You will spend the night in Arusha known by many as the tourism capital of Tanzania. This is where most guests arrive before setting out to the various tourism destinations in the country. Refresh as you meditate on exploring another celebrated and amazing park in Serengeti national park.

Day 4: Transfer from Arusha to Lake Manyara national park

Wake up very early have a pleasant breakfast, check out of your room and start on the journey to Lake Manyara national park. On your way relish the wonderful countryside that the region is known for. You will arrive at Lake Manyara in time for a well-awaited lunch, rest for a while before setting out for an afternoon game drive. The park is a must-visit for guests on a wildebeest migration to complement its huge concentration of game and wildlife biodiversity.

This is attributed to its being beautifully located in the western arm of the East Africa rift valley plus the several soda lakes it boasts of. This supports different plant life attracting grazers like antelopes, gazelle, and elephants among others. This in turn automatically brings large numbers of a predator who hunt for this abundant prey. Lake Manyara is celebrated for having one of the largest elephant herds in addition to the amusing tree-climbing lions.

You will retire to your lodge for dinner while reminiscing about the day's adventures and get some sleep to recharge for the following day.

Day 5: Transfer to Serengeti national park

After a good night's rest enjoy your breakfast, check out of your lodge and embark on the transfer to Serengeti national park. This park is referred to by some as " the heart of wild Africa." En route to the park take in the amazing changing scenery from mountainous terrain to flat rolling savannah plains stretching as far as the eye can reach. You will also pass through the Ngorongoro conservation area one of the exciting conservation areas to visit.

You will finally arrive at the Serenora area located in the centre of the park and the source of the Seronera River. This is a vital point to the ecosystem in the park and draws numerous animals by being a permanent source of water for the animals. And one of these is the celebrated wildebeest that reside here in thousands. This will be one of the great spots to encounter your major attraction for your safari.

You will have an afternoon game drive after lunch to explore the various game from wildebeest, elephants, and predators like hyenas, lions, jackals and bird species that reside in Serengeti national park. Afterwards, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight rest.

Day 6: Full-day Serengeti national park experience

Your sixth day will kick off with a wonderful early breakfast like the previous days. This early breakfast will put you in a position to set out in time to catch the early risers as they start their day. Some of the games you will encounter include large concentrations of elephants, buffalo, gazelle, impala, and different antelope species and their predators following closely behind to pick this easier prey.

You will have lunch in the amazing African wilderness to give you more time to explore the rich biodiversity this section of Serengeti offers. The track that runs along the Seronera and Sogore rivers is a must-visit for guests who go for wildebeest migration safaris. This route will also take you through the Maasai Kopjes circuit where you meet big numbers of lions and if lucky some of the largest cobras you will ever meet.

 Later in the evening retire to your lodge for refreshments, rest and a pleasant dinner under the wild African sky.

Day 7: Transfer to Ngorongoro crater

Immediately after a refreshing breakfast, you will check out of your lodge and head for the Ngorongoro conservation area. This is another fascinating area to check out when on a wildebeest migration safari. This area is a hub spot for various animals that are attracted to its permanent water source throughout the year. Among these include large herds of wildebeest, African elephants, eland, Thompson gazelle, jackals, hyenas, buffalo, rhino, and African leopard to mention a few.

En route to the Ngorongoro crater, you will have a stopover at Olduvai Gorge known by many as the cradle of mankind. This is where they believed skulls of early men were discovered by Dr Lois and Mary Leakey. After taking enough photos for souvenirs of this ancient place continue to your lodge for lunch and rest for the rest day.

Day 8: Transfer back to Arusha and Departure

Following a late peaceful breakfast, you will check out of your lodge and embark on your journey back to Arusha town. En route to Arusha relish the incredible scenery along the road from stunning Savanna plains, and view the various wildlife such as buffalo, lions, elephants, eland, and giraffes among others. You will be dropped off at Arusha airport for your departure flight or hotel based on your preferences. This will mark the end of your amazing 8 days of wildebeest migration safari in Kenya and Tanzania.
