Detailed Itinerary
Your day begins very early, with a 3:00 AM pickup from your hotel in Kigali. This early departure is important—it allows you to reach Bwindi in time for the morning gorilla trekking briefing.
As you leave Kigali, you’ll drive through quiet roads and rolling hills, often referred to as the “land of a thousand hills.” After about 3 to 4 hours, you’ll reach the Katuna border, where you’ll cross from Rwanda into Uganda. Your guide will assist with the process, which is usually smooth and straightforward.
From the border, it’s a short drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You’ll arrive at the park headquarters where you’ll join other trekkers for a briefing by the park rangers. They will explain the rules, safety guidelines, and what to expect during the trek.
You’ll then be assigned to a gorilla family and begin your trek into the forest with experienced guides and trackers. Bwindi’s terrain is thick, green, and sometimes steep—this is part of what makes the experience feel so raw and authentic.
The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are located that day. Once they are found, everything slows down—you’ll have one full hour to observe them. You might see them feeding, grooming, playing, or simply resting. Being that close to them in their natural habitat is something most people describe as unforgettable.
After your time with the gorillas, you’ll trek back out of the forest and head to Kabale town for a late lunch and some rest.
In the afternoon, you’ll begin your journey back to Kigali, crossing the border again and arriving in the evening, usually between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM depending on conditions.
