Ways to Travel from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

There are several ways to reach Volcanoes National Park from Kigali. Your choice depends on your budget, travel arrangements, schedule and preferred level of comfort.

1. Private 4x4 Safari Vehicle

A private safari vehicle with a professional driver-guide is one of the most convenient ways to travel from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park.

Your driver can collect you directly from Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another location in the city and take you to your accommodation in Musanze or near Kinigi.

Private transfers are particularly suitable for couples, families and travellers planning gorilla trekking because they offer flexibility and eliminate the need to coordinate multiple transport connections.

Benefits include:

  • Convenient hotel or airport pickup.

  • Flexible departure times.

  • Direct transfers to your accommodation.

  • Comfortable travel with luggage.

  • Opportunities for photography and short stops along the way.

  • Assistance with coordinating your gorilla trekking arrangements.

For travellers combining Rwanda with Uganda, a private safari vehicle also makes it easier to continue towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

2. Public Bus from Kigali to Musanze

Travellers looking for a more affordable option can use public transportation from Kigali to Musanze.

Buses and shared minibuses operate between Kigali and Musanze, with departures generally available from Nyabugogo bus station.

The journey usually takes approximately 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic and the service used.

However, public buses do not take passengers directly to Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi.

Upon reaching Musanze, you must arrange additional transport to your lodge or the park headquarters.

This option is suitable for independent travellers who have enough time and are comfortable arranging their own local transportation.

For visitors scheduled to undertake gorilla trekking, it is advisable to reach Musanze the day before the activity rather than relying on public transportation on the morning of the trek.

3. Taxi or Private Car Hire

Another option is hiring a taxi or private car in Kigali.

This provides more flexibility than public transportation and allows you to travel directly to your accommodation near Volcanoes National Park.

However, when hiring a vehicle, confirm whether the quoted price includes fuel, the driver's services, waiting time and any additional transfers required during your stay.

For a more organised experience, booking a private transfer with a tour operator can simplify your arrangements.

Can You Travel from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park on the Same Day?

Yes. It is possible to travel from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park and undertake certain activities on the same day.

However, whether this is practical depends on the activity you intend to do.

For mountain gorilla trekking, visitors must arrive at the park headquarters in Kinigi early in the morning for registration and briefing, normally around 7:00 AM.

This means that travellers staying in Kigali would need to leave very early, often around 4:00–5:00 AM, depending on their pickup location and road conditions.

Although a same-day transfer is possible, we recommend spending the previous night in Musanze or near Kinigi.

This allows you to:

  • Avoid an unnecessarily early departure from Kigali.

  • Arrive at the briefing point without rushing.

  • Enjoy a more relaxed morning before trekking.

  • Have more time to prepare your trekking equipment.

For visitors with limited time, a well-organised one-day gorilla trekking excursion from Kigali can still be arranged.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Mountain gorilla trekking is the main attraction of Volcanoes National Park and one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Africa.

The park is home to several habituated mountain gorilla families that visitors can encounter during guided trekking excursions.

The experience begins at Kinigi park headquarters, where visitors register, receive a briefing and are assigned to a gorilla family.

Accompanied by experienced park guides and trackers, you enter the forest in search of the gorillas.

The duration and difficulty of the trek vary depending on the location of the assigned gorilla family. Some treks take a relatively short time, while others involve several hours of hiking through dense vegetation and steep mountain terrain.

Once you locate the gorillas, visitors are generally allowed to spend one hour observing them.

You may see young gorillas playing, mothers caring for their infants and dominant silverbacks watching over their families.

Important information about gorilla trekking:

  • Minimum age: 15 years.

  • A valid gorilla trekking permit is required.

  • Visitors must follow the instructions of their park guides.

  • The standard viewing time is one hour.

  • Trekking difficulty varies depending on the gorilla family's location.

  • Visitors should arrive at Kinigi for the morning briefing.

Gorilla permits should be secured in advance, particularly during popular travel periods.

Other Activities in Volcanoes National Park

Although gorilla trekking is the park's most famous attraction, there are several other activities worth including in your visit.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Golden monkey tracking is another popular activity in Volcanoes National Park.

Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga region and are recognised by their distinctive golden-orange fur.

The activity involves walking through the bamboo forests in search of habituated golden monkey groups.

Compared with gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking is generally less demanding, although walking conditions can still vary.

It is an excellent activity for visitors who want to experience more of the park's wildlife.

Hiking Mount Bisoke

Mount Bisoke is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Virunga Mountains.

The volcano stands at approximately 3,711 metres above sea level and is famous for its beautiful crater lake at the summit.

The hike involves ascending through different vegetation zones, including bamboo forest and montane vegetation.

Although the climb can be physically demanding, the views from the summit make it a rewarding experience for adventurous travellers.

Dian Fossey Tomb Hike

Visitors interested in conservation history can undertake the Dian Fossey hike.

The trail leads towards the former research area of the renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, whose work contributed significantly to mountain gorilla conservation.

The hike provides an opportunity to learn about the history of gorilla research, conservation challenges and the efforts to protect these endangered primates.

Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo

The Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo are among the most beautiful scenic attractions near Volcanoes National Park.

Located in the northern part of Rwanda, the lakes are surrounded by green hills and offer impressive views of the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Visitors can enjoy boat excursions, photography and peaceful countryside experiences.

They are an excellent addition to a gorilla trekking itinerary, particularly for travellers spending two or more nights in the Musanze region.

Where to Stay Near Volcanoes National Park

There are several accommodation options around Musanze and Kinigi, ranging from affordable guesthouses to luxury safari lodges.

Staying close to the park is particularly important for visitors undertaking gorilla trekking because the morning briefing starts early.

Accommodation can be selected according to your budget, preferred comfort level and travel arrangements.

Musanze town

Musanze offers a variety of hotels, restaurants and guesthouses. It is a convenient base for visitors who want access to local services and restaurants.

Kinigi

Staying around Kinigi provides convenient access to the park headquarters, making it particularly suitable for gorilla trekking.

Luxury lodges

The area also has high-end safari lodges offering comfortable accommodation, mountain views, dining facilities and personalised services.

We recommend choosing accommodation based on your planned activities and the location of your gorilla trekking departure point.

Best Time to Travel from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park can be visited throughout the year.

However, weather conditions can influence road travel, hiking difficulty and the overall trekking experience.

Dry Seasons

The main drier periods generally occur from June to September and December to February.

These months are popular for gorilla trekking and hiking because forest trails are often easier to navigate.

However, rainfall can occur even during the drier months, particularly at higher elevations.

Rainy Seasons

The wetter periods generally occur from March to May and October to November.

During these months, forest trails can become muddy and slippery, making some hikes more challenging.

On the other hand, the landscape is particularly green and beautiful, and fewer visitors may be travelling during certain periods.

Gorilla trekking remains possible throughout the year.
