4-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Nyungwe Chimps Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Your 4-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Nyungwe Chimps adventure begins with an early pickup in Kigali by your professional driver-guide. From Rwanda's capital, travel southwest through the famous Land of a Thousand Hills, passing terraced farmland, rolling hills and rural communities.

Continue toward Nyungwe Forest National Park, located in southwestern Rwanda. The journey takes you from the urban surroundings of Kigali into one of Africa's most important montane rainforests. Nyungwe is renowned for its rich biodiversity and is home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and numerous other primate species.

Arrive at the lodge in the evening. Check in, enjoy dinner and relax as you prepare for your chimpanzee trekking experience the following morning.
 

Day 2: Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk

After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before beginning your Nyungwe chimpanzee trekking experience.

Enter the rainforest with experienced guides and trek through the dense vegetation in search of habituated chimpanzees. The duration of the trek depends on the location and movements of the chimpanzee community. Once you locate the chimpanzees, spend time observing them in their natural forest habitat.

Along the trail, keep an eye out for other primates, colourful forest birds and other wildlife. Nyungwe's diverse ecosystem makes the trek an experience beyond simply seeing chimpanzees.

After the chimpanzee trek, return to the lodge for lunch before heading to Uwinka for the Nyungwe Canopy Walk. The experience includes a guided forest trail leading to a 160-metre suspended walkway, rising approximately 70 metres above the forest floor.

Walking high above the rainforest canopy offers a completely different perspective of Nyungwe, with panoramic views across the treetops and opportunities to spot colourful birds, primates and other wildlife moving through the forest.

After the canopy walk, return to the lodge and enjoy a relaxed evening surrounded by the peaceful rainforest, preparing for the following day's journey north to Volcanoes National Park.
 

Day 3: Nyungwe Forest to Volcanoes National Park

Enjoy an early breakfast before beginning the long journey north from Nyungwe toward Volcanoes National Park in the Musanze region.

The route takes you through Rwanda's spectacular mountainous countryside, with changing landscapes as you travel from the southwestern rainforest toward the volcanic highlands of northern Rwanda.

After arriving in the Musanze area, enjoy lunch before visiting Iby'iwacu Cultural Village. The cultural experience provides an opportunity to learn about Rwandan traditions, local customs and the way of life of communities living around Volcanoes National Park.

In the late afternoon, continue to your accommodation near the gorilla trekking area. Check in and relax for the evening while preparing for the following day's mountain gorilla trek.
 

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Wake up early for the highlight of your 4-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Nyungwe Chimps safari: mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

After breakfast, drive to the park headquarters for your trekking briefing. You will then enter the forest with experienced ranger guides in search of one of the habituated mountain gorilla families.

The trek can take several hours depending on the location of the gorillas and the terrain. Once you find the family, spend approximately one hour observing the gorillas as they feed, rest, move through the forest and interact with one another.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before beginning your journey back to Kigali. Travel south through Rwanda's scenic countryside, arriving in Kigali in the evening.

Your 4-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Nyungwe Chimps safari ends in Kigali after an extraordinary combination of chimpanzee trekking and mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
