Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda's most rewarding destinations for wildlife safaris, offering a distinctive combination of open savannah, rolling hills, acacia woodland, freshwater lakes and extensive wetlands. Located in western Uganda, between Kampala and Mbarara, the park is the closest savannah national park to the capital, making it an excellent destination for short wildlife safaris and longer Uganda itineraries.

Although relatively small compared with other national parks in Uganda, Lake Mburo supports an impressive variety of wildlife. It is particularly known for its large populations of Burchell's zebras, impalas and elands, alongside giraffes, buffaloes, topis, waterbucks and warthogs.

The park also offers experiences that are less common in other Ugandan wildlife destinations, including guided walking safaris, horseback riding, mountain biking and boat trips. These activities provide different ways to explore the landscape and observe wildlife beyond conventional game drives.

For travellers exploring southwestern Uganda, Lake Mburo National Park is an excellent addition to a safari combining wildlife viewing, mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi and relaxation at Lake Bunyonyi.

Wildlife in Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is particularly important for protecting Uganda's savannah wildlife, including several antelope species that are not easily encountered elsewhere in the country.

Zebras

Burchell's zebras are among the most recognisable animals in Lake Mburo. They are frequently encountered grazing in open grasslands and around the park's woodland areas.

Their striking black-and-white stripes create excellent photography opportunities, particularly during early morning and late afternoon game drives.

Impalas

Lake Mburo is the only national park in Uganda with a naturally occurring population of impalas. These graceful antelopes are commonly seen grazing in the savannah and browsing around acacia trees.

The park offers particularly good opportunities to observe their behaviour, including territorial displays by male impalas.

Elands

The common eland, Africa's largest antelope, is another important species found in Lake Mburo. These large herbivores move through the park's grasslands and woodland habitats, sometimes forming sizeable herds.

Although they can be more difficult to locate than zebras and impalas, encountering elands is one of the highlights of wildlife viewing in the park.

Rothschild's Giraffes

Rothschild's giraffes were introduced to Lake Mburo following a translocation programme from Murchison Falls National Park. Their presence has added another attraction to the park's wildlife experience.

Visitors may encounter these tall mammals browsing on acacia trees or moving through open woodland.

Other Mammals

Other wildlife species found in Lake Mburo include:

  • African buffaloes

  • Common warthogs

  • Topis

  • Defassa waterbucks

  • Bushbucks

  • Oribis

  • Common duikers

  • Hippopotamuses

  • Spotted hyenas

  • Leopards

  • Sitatungas

Leopards and hyenas are present but are less frequently encountered. Hippos and Nile crocodiles inhabit the park's lakes and associated waterways.

Safari Experiences in Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo offers several ways to explore its landscapes and wildlife. Visitors can combine traditional game drives with activities on foot, on horseback or on the water.

Game Drives

Game drives are among the most popular activities in Lake Mburo National Park. They take visitors through open savannah, acacia woodland and rolling grasslands in search of wildlife.

Morning game drives offer opportunities to see animals as they become active after sunrise, while afternoon drives provide excellent opportunities for photography as the light softens.

Common sightings include zebras, impalas, buffaloes, giraffes, topis, elands and warthogs.

Night game drives can also be arranged, offering opportunities to search for nocturnal species such as hyenas, genets, civets, bush babies and porcupines. Leopards may also be encountered, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Boat Safaris on Lake Mburo

A boat safari on Lake Mburo provides a different perspective of the park's wildlife and scenery.

During the excursion, visitors explore the lake's shoreline and surrounding wetlands, where hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds can often be observed.

African fish eagles, pied kingfishers, herons, cormorants and other waterbirds are among the species that may be seen.

The boat trip is particularly rewarding for photographers and birdwatchers, as it allows visitors to observe aquatic wildlife at a relatively close distance.

Guided Walking Safaris

Lake Mburo is one of Uganda's best destinations for guided walking safaris.

Accompanied by an armed Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger, visitors can explore selected areas of the park on foot, learning about animal tracks, vegetation, wildlife behaviour and the relationship between different species and their habitats.

Walking safaris offer opportunities to encounter zebras, giraffes, antelopes and other animals without the enclosure of a safari vehicle.

One of the interesting experiences is visiting the park's salt licks, where different herbivores gather to obtain essential minerals from the soil.

Horseback Safaris

Horseback safaris are a distinctive attraction in Lake Mburo National Park.

Accompanied by experienced guides, visitors explore selected wildlife areas on horseback, observing animals from a different perspective.

Zebras, impalas, giraffes and other herbivores may be encountered during these excursions.

Because visitors are not travelling in a conventional safari vehicle, horseback safaris offer a particularly memorable way to experience the park's natural environment.

Mountain Biking Safaris

Lake Mburo also offers opportunities for guided mountain biking through selected areas of the park.

Cycling provides an active way to explore the savannah landscape while observing wildlife and enjoying the surrounding scenery.

These excursions are generally conducted with an experienced guide and appropriate safety arrangements.

Birdwatching in Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo is an important birdwatching destination in Uganda, with more than 300 recorded bird species.

Its combination of lakes, papyrus swamps, acacia woodland, grasslands and forest habitats supports a diverse bird population.

Some of the notable species include:

  • African finfoot

  • Papyrus gonolek

  • Shoebill

  • African fish eagle

  • Grey crowned crane

  • Southern ground hornbill

  • Bare-faced go-away bird

  • White-winged warbler

  • Blue-headed coucal

  • Brown-chested lapwing

  • Red-faced barbet

The papyrus wetlands are particularly interesting for birdwatchers looking for specialised wetland species, while the acacia woodlands support a variety of woodland birds.

Birdwatching can be combined with game drives, boat trips and guided nature walks.

Best Time to Visit Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park can be visited throughout the year, although wildlife viewing and road conditions vary with the seasons.

The drier periods, generally from June to September and December to February, are particularly suitable for game drives. Vegetation is often less dense, and animals may become easier to locate around water sources and open grazing areas.

The rainy seasons, usually from March to May and October to November, transform the landscape into greener surroundings. These months can be rewarding for birdwatching and photography, although some tracks may become muddy and more challenging to navigate.

For travellers planning a Uganda wildlife safari, Lake Mburo can be visited in both seasons, depending on the overall itinerary and preferred activities.
