Start before sunrise on a 1 Day Bwindi Gorilla Habituation Experience from Lake Bunyonyi or Kabale to Rushaga Gorilla Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After the morning briefing, join ranger guides, trackers and researchers to track a semi-habituated gorilla group. Limited to just four visitors, the experience includes up to four hours observing the gorillas while learning about their behaviour, movements, tracking and the ongoing habituation process. After the experience, trek back to the trailhead for a debrief and certificate before continuing to Lake Bunyonyi, Kabale, Kigali or your next destination.
Your Gorilla Habituation Experience begins before sunrise with a 4:00 AM departure from Lake Bunyonyi or Kabale toward the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The early start allows you to reach Rushaga in time for the morning pre-trek briefing which normally begins at 6:30 AM.
The drive takes you through the dramatic landscapes of southwestern Uganda, with steep terraced hills, small farming communities and winding mountain roads gradually giving way to the forested hills of Bwindi.
On arrival at the Rushaga sector, you will register and meet the ranger guides, trackers and researchers involved in the habituation of the semi-habituated gorilla group.
After a briefing, the team will explain the day's activity, the rules for observing the gorillas and how visitors should behave in the forest.
Unlike ordinary gorilla trekking, this experience involves following a semi-habituated gorilla group together with the people who monitor the group as part of the habituation process.
The experience is limited to four visitors, allowing for a small group in the forest and close interaction with the habituation team.
You will then enter Bwindi with the ranger guides, trackers and researchers.
The gorillas move freely through the forest, so finding them requires following signs of their movements and information gathered by the tracking team. The researchers and trackers monitor the group and can explain what they are observing as the day progresses.
As you walk through the forest, they may point out feeding sites, nests, broken vegetation, tracks and other signs that help determine where the gorillas have moved.
The forest itself is part of the experience. You may encounter dense vegetation, steep slopes, streams and changing weather as you follow the habituation team deeper into Bwindi.
Once the group is located, you can spend up to four hours observing the gorillas, following the instructions of the ranger and research team.
The extended time allows you to observe the gorillas at a slower pace and see more of their natural behaviour. You may watch individuals feeding, resting, moving through the vegetation, interacting with one another or responding to other members of the group.
The researchers play an important role during the experience, monitoring the gorillas and recording information about their behaviour and interactions as part of the ongoing habituation process. Their presence also gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about how researchers and trackers work with a semi-habituated gorilla group.
The gorillas remain wild animals, and their behaviour cannot be predicted. They may move deeper into the forest or disappear into thick vegetation, and the research and ranger teams will determine how the group is approached and followed.
Rather than being simply a longer gorilla trek, the experience gives you an insight into the habituation process itself.
You will spend time alongside the ranger, tracking and research teams while they observe the gorillas and monitor their behaviour. Depending on what happens during the day, you may see researchers documenting individual animals, recording observations or discussing the group's movements.
The experience provides a closer look at the conservation work behind gorilla tourism and the gradual process of allowing gorillas to become accustomed to the presence of humans.
After the permitted observation period, you will leave the gorilla group and begin the trek back through the forest with the team.
Once you return to the Rushaga briefing area, you will complete the day's debriefing and receive your certificate of participation before meeting your private guide for the journey onward.
You can return to Lake Bunyonyi, Kabale or Kigali, continue to another destination in Uganda, or arrange accommodation near Bwindi for the night.
The exact duration of the forest walk depends on the location and movements of the gorilla group, terrain and weather conditions. The gorillas' location and behaviour cannot be guaranteed in advance.
