Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda will be your key destination for this gorilla expedition and the park is found in the Northwestern side of the country.

It is in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park where over 30% of the 1063 rare mountain gorilla population currently live. Tracking to see gorillas at Volcanoes NP will be done on the 12 habituated gorilla families including among others Sabyinyo, Susa A, Karisimbi (Susa B), Hirwa, Umubano, Kwitonda, Agashya, Bwenge gorilla family, Ugenda, Amahoro, Titus and others.

The beauty about this package is that you won’t have long distance to travel, just 2-3 hours and you will be at Volcanoes National Park. This is the most accessible gorilla park from city center unlike other destination. The Rwanda Volcanoes N/Park forms part of the extensive Virunga Conservation Area (VCA), a region with 8 Virunga Volcanoes, 5 of which are all found in this park including Sabyinyo, Karisimbi, Gahinga, Bisoke and Muhabura Volcanoes. Other wild animals living in this park include golden monkeys, buffaloes, elephants, hyenas, over 200 bird species and more.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Visit Kigali genocide center & transfer to Volcanoes National Park Ruhengeri

Meet with your Rwanda driver guide for a warm welcome, greeting and after get briefed on what this 2 day trip is all about. Next start with first expedition – Kigali city tour expected to cover 2 hours and areas of interest today will be visiting Gisozi or Kigali genocide memorial center to have insight into the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Proceed to Kirimonko local market, observe how business is done here by locals, buy some fresh fruits and the next stop will be the Kings Palace, among other remarkable tourist sites to be visited. The driver guide will then connect you to the hotel or classic restaurant for a delicious lunch and after, begin a 2-3 hours’ trip to Ruhengeri Volcanoes National Park.

If you have always wondered why Rwanda is described as the Land of a Thousand, today will be the day to marvel at God’s creation, you will be amazed by the rolling hills, the lush green and so much more. With early arrival at Volcanoes N/Park, check in at the lodge for a relaxed evening, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Long day gorilla trekking, depart for Kigali

After your spicy and hot tea or coffee, transfer to Kinigi for the 7:00am briefing about rules for gorilla trekking. This is where gorilla families will be assigned to you as well and 12 habituated groups are all open to trekking in this park. Depending on your speed of hiking, a normal gorilla trek takes between 2 and 6 hours inclusive of 1 hour with gorillas. After, expect to return to the lodge to have some refreshments, and later meet your driver guide who will transfer you back to Kigali marking the end of your gorilla trip in Rwanda.
