Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano with a summit height of 4,321 meters, featuring the largest volcanic base and caldera in the world. Situated on the Uganda-Kenya border, its peak, Wagagai, lies in Uganda, making it the ideal destination for trekking enthusiasts. The mountain’s varied altitudinal vegetation zones, ranging from lush montane forests to moorlands adorned with giant lobelias, offer spectacular scenery for hikers. Wildlife such as forest monkeys, small antelopes, and over 300 bird species enhance the safari experience, blending adventure with nature exploration.
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be greeted by a professional guide who will brief you on the 4-day Mount Elgon hiking adventure. After the briefing, travel eastward to Budadiri near Mbale, the starting point for the Sasa River Trail. The journey passes through picturesque countryside, with optional stops to explore the Source of the Nile or the lush Jinja area. Arrive in Budadiri and finalize preparations for the trek, including obtaining permits and organizing porters and guides.
The trekking adventure begins with an early morning hike through the foothills of Mount Elgon. The trail quickly becomes steep, taking you through the “Wall of Death,” a challenging section that rewards hikers with stunning views. Along the way, encounter traditional farmlands and bamboo zones teeming with life. After a day of trekking, reach Sasa River Camp, surrounded by montane forest, where the calming sounds of the Sasa River provide a peaceful ambiance. This 7-8 hour trek covers 8 kilometers and offers a chance to spot forest monkeys and colorful bird species.
Continue your ascent through Mount Elgon’s diverse ecological zones, transitioning from bamboo forests to the moorland characterized by giant lobelias and groundsels. The 5-kilometer trek takes about 4-5 hours, with incredible views and opportunities to appreciate the mountain's unique geology and flora. Mude Cave Camp, located near cliffs and natural caves, is an excellent spot to acclimatize for the summit push the following day.
Begin the final ascent to Wagagai Peak early in the morning. This exhilarating hike takes you through the alpine zone to the summit, where you will marvel at the expansive Mount Elgon caldera and panoramic views of Uganda and Kenya. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Budadiri via the Sasa Trail, completing the trek through verdant landscapes and scenic vistas. From Budadiri, you will be transferred back to Kampala or Entebbe, marking the end of your Mount Elgon hiking safari.
