4 Days Nyungwe Chimps and Lake Kivu Safari

This 4-day trip is a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. You’ll get to explore Nyungwe Forest, home to playful chimpanzees and lush greenery, and then unwind by the calm waters of Lake Kivu. It’s a great way to experience some of Rwanda’s most beautiful places—ideal if you love nature, want a break from the city, or just need a few days to recharge in a peaceful setting.

Highlights:

  • Chimpanzee trekking
  • Canopy walk
  • Relaxation on Lake Kivu

Day 1: Arrive in Kigali and transfer to Nyungwe National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide, who will give you a detailed briefing about your upcoming safari adventure. After introductions and a short overview of the journey ahead, you’ll begin your scenic drive toward Nyungwe National Park—Rwanda’s lush rainforest jewel located in the southwestern part of the country. This region is famed for its incredible biodiversity and is one of the best places in Africa to see chimpanzees and other primates. As you travel through the beautiful Rwandan countryside, take in the rolling hills, terraced farms, and vibrant roadside communities that give the country its nickname, "Land of a Thousand Hills." By late afternoon, arrive at your comfortable safari lodge, perfectly situated in or near the verdant edges of Nyungwe Forest, where the cool mountain air and tranquil setting offer the perfect welcome to your wilderness experience.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest and Transfer to Lake Kivu

After an early breakfast, head to the park offices for a briefing with the ranger guides. Begin your chimpanzee trekking adventure—an experience that typically takes 2 to 5 hours depending on the location of the chimps. Spend one magical hour observing our close relatives in their natural habitat.

As you walk through Nyungwe’s dense rainforest, keep an eye out for other primates such as the colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and blue monkeys. Nyungwe is also a haven for bird enthusiasts, boasting over 300 bird species, including the Rwenzori turaco, great blue turaco, and numerous Albertine Rift endemics like the red-collared babbler and grauer’s warbler. The forest is also home to small antelopes, bush pigs, and a variety of butterflies and orchids.

Return to the lodge for lunch, then drive to Lake Kivu. Enjoy the stunning lakeside scenery as you arrive in towns like Kibuye or Gisenyi. Check into your lakeside hotel for a peaceful evening by the water.

Day 3: Lake Kivu Leisure and Optional Activities

After your adventures in the forest, today is all about slowing down and enjoying the peaceful charm of Lake Kivu. Spend a relaxing day by the water, surrounded by gentle hills and the soothing sounds of the lake. If you’re up for it, take a boat ride across the calm waters to explore some of the nearby islands—each with its own story and scenery. You can also opt for a refreshing swim, visit a local coffee plantation to learn how Rwanda’s famous beans are grown and roasted, or take a guided walk through nearby fishing villages to get a glimpse into the daily lives of local communities. Of course, there’s also the option to do absolutely nothing—just lounge by the beach, sip a cool drink, and watch the sun sparkle across the lake. It’s the perfect way to reflect on your safari so far and recharge for whatever’s next.

Day 4: Return to Kigali and Departure

After breakfast, start your journey back to Kigali. Depending on your flight time, you may choose to visit key city attractions like the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, or local craft shops. Be dropped at Kigali International Airport in time for your departure flight—ending your incredible 4-day Rwanda safari.
